Schönheit ist Nebensache (Beauty is accessory)

“Beauty is accessory” is one of the instructions at the beginning of the fourth movement of Paul Hindemith’s Sonata for solo viola Op. 25 No. 1. This could just as easily have come from Dore Hoyer, expressionist choreographer and author of the dance cycle “Afectos Humanos,” with which Pol Pi has been working for the past twelve years. Both works consist of five short, expressive solos and were written under the pressure of suffering in totalitarian regimes. Using letters from both artists, Pol Pi develops a dialog between their voices and the political situation in Brazil under Bolsonaro. Words, music and movement combine to form an intimate, quasi political trio.

Pol Pi is a Brazilian transmasculine dance artist living in France since 2013. A dancer for over ten years and a musician since childhood, he studied choreography and began developing and performing his work in Brazil in 2007, later expanding to France and across Europe from 2017 onward, where he founded the company NO DRAMA. He holds a degree in classical music from the University of Campinas and a master’s in choreography from CCN Montpellier. Alongside dance, he has worked as a musician, actor, director, and sound designer. His works have been presented internationally. For more than 20 years, he has taught dance in diverse social and artistic contexts and is interested in intuitive listening, altered states of consciousness, and care as artistic practice.
